Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives：A Number of people with chronic mental illness have long-lasting psychiatric rehabilitation, but in reality they get to struggle with stereotype and stigma of mental illness. The purpose of this study was to develop measure of empowerment that is opposed of self-stigma and to examine the reliability and validity of the Empowerment Scale.
Methods： The subjects were total 118 inpatients and outpatients under psychiatic rehabilitation services in Yong-in City and Seongnam City in Kyonggi Province. Analyzing item-pool including specific empowerment concepts, the Empowerment scale have consisted of 25 items with subscale of self-empowerment and social(community) empowerment. To establish the scale’s relaiblity and validity, factor analysis, internal consistancy, and correlation were conducted.
Results：Reliabilities of individual items, scales, and inventory total are in the good to excellect range. The internal consistency coeffecients(Cronbach alpha) of each subsacle was approximately .80. Empowerment scores was related to QOL(quality of life), self-esteem and BASIS-32(Behavior and Symptom Identification Scale-32) positively. But Empowerment was inversly related to ISMI(internalized self-stigma of mental illness).
Conclusion： Overall, the findings support the utility of the Korean Empowerment Scale. The findings set a framework for a clearer understanding of the imprecise and overused concept of empowerment. The scale demonstrated adequate internal consistancy and some evidence for validity. Further testing must be done to establish whether it has disciminant validity and is sensitive to change.
